Today, Germany and Italy can look back on a long journey together. They have always stood side by side in the major decisions concerning the European Community and the Atlantic community. The quality of German-Italian relations is also measured by the fact that short-term differences of opinion, such as those that existed temporarily during the reunification process, have not left any lasting repercussions.

The subject of the following discussion, German-Italian relations in the light of the personal friendship between Helmut Kohl and Giulio Andreotti, is that phase.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie is Director of the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and the
Henry Kissinger Professor of Security and Strategic Studies at the Institute for Political Science and Sociology.
