 production of knowledge in and about the world's oceans represents a centr
 al contribution to climate research. But what social processes can be obse
 rved on these research vessels? \nProf Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge and Ramo
 na Haegele talk about this based on empirical ethnographic research on two
  research vessels in Germany. They conclude that these are places of socia
 l concentration in which everyday routine\, pressure to perform and the br
 eadth of the horizon characterise social interaction.\nBut what are the ef
