DESCRIPTION:Latin America plays an increasingly important role in the inte
 rnational politics and economy of the 21st century. At the same time\, its
  countries face immense regional challenges. However\, in German and Europ
 ean foreign and security policy\, the region has long played a subordinate
  role.\n\nWe take this opportunity to discuss the fundamental crises and c
 hallenges currently facing Latin American society and politics. What is th
 e state of human rights in Latin America? To what extent is political viol
 ence escalating in the countries? Are authoritarian regimes strengthening?
  How do external actors influence developments in the region\, and what in
 terests do they pursue?
