While expanding renewable energy is one way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, we must not make the mistake of becoming dependent on raw materials from China or other countries. It is important to be aware of these risks and to take active steps to counter these dependencies.

With regard to nuclear power, Dr. Frank Umbach sees Germany as internationally isolated. In Europe, he notes, there is a majority that is more open to nuclear power.

He sees a particular threat to German energy security in the potential loss of parts of Qatar’s LNG production. This capacity has been reduced for years due to the war. One way to compensate for this loss is fracking gas, of which Germany has significant reserves. Especially since dependence on gas cannot be overcome in the medium term, this option must be seriously considered.
