Research projects

  • USA insider - the inside of American foreign policy
In addition to foreign factors of power, the "inside" of the US will be fundamental for a comprehensive analysis of future US foreign policy. Especially since it is decision-makers who "perceive" external developments in one way or another, adjusting their actions accordingly and thus justifying them to their own population. It is important to work out who will prevail in the domestic political discourse and therefore which interests and ideas of world order will be established in the USA.

Josef Braml and Ulrich Schlie, „The Biden Administration’s Geo-Economics – A Challenge for Europe“, in: The Defence Horizon Journal, Special Edition I/2021, Geopolitics, p. 6-9.

Given the obvious social and economic problems in the United States, European observers mistakenly expect the next US government to mainly focus on domestic issues and to neglect foreign policy. Europeans should realize that Republican obstruction in the domestic field will lead the Biden administration to use its greater room for manoeuvre in foreign policy. The United States will continue to use their economic weapons against rivals such as Russia and China. Above all, the geo-economic rivalry between the United States and China will affect European interests and should as well give the Europeans reasons to think more geo-strategically, conclude Josef Braml and Ulrich Schlie in a Special Edition “Geopolitics“ (I/2021) of The Defence Horizon Journal.
