The geostrategic role of Turkey

Turkey's key geopolitical and geostrategic role in the current global political situation is demonstrated in many ways: in its significance as the south eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance, as a central Eurasian region at the interface of major geopolitical areas; against the background of changing political-economic constellations in Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as an energy hub between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. In cooperation with renowned European and North American experts on Turkey, a research project will be conducted over several years to determine Turkey's geopolitical role against the background of military strategic, constitutional, regional and domestic political aspects, and especially its impact on the internal development of the North Atlantic Alliance and the future policy of the European Union. The related research questions will be examined in greater depth in individual studies and presented for discussion in academic publications and research papers among experts. The discussion on "The future geopolitical role of Turkey" is planned for January 2021 and is based on a specialist study headed by Ulrich Schlie with the participation of Franz Karg, Andrea Tarquini and Thrasyvoulos Terry Stamatopoulos. Further individual studies will be published in the course of 2021.
