Transatlantic Relations at the

Every new American presidency begins with a fundamental foreign policy review. The connection between internal development, the assumption of global political responsibility and the associated future orientation of the United States will have far-reaching consequences in terms of alliances and regulatory policy effects, especially for its European partners.

Both Germany and the European Union will be faced with far-reaching political decisions and will have to realign their political instruments and priorities. Transatlantic relations will remain high on the political agenda. Against this background, a task force initiated by the Henry Kissinger Professorship is presently analyzing the current and future strategic developments in the United States and their resulting challenges for Germany and transatlantic relations. In a series of working group meetings with renowned high-ranking experts from academia, business and politics, as well as representatives of U.S. partner institutions, a process of dialogue on questions concerning the future of transatlantic relations has been initiated. The Task Force's report will be publicly discussed on December 2nd at the International Security Forum Bonn 2020. It is intended to help identify future priority topics, new cooperation opportunities and incentive for economic development.

On the basis of this report and an ongoing evaluation of transatlantic relations in cooperation with American partner institutions, a new transatlantic focus will be established with the Henry Kissinger Professorship for Security and Strategy Research. The focus will be on questions of international order and the future development of the state systems, in particular the joint analysis of relations with China and Russia, the relationship between power and law, as well as topics of particular relevance to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
