On June 18, 2019, several representatives of multiple faculties of the unviersity of Bonn founded the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) as an interdisciplinary research center for strategic foreign policy, european and security studies. It is headed by the Henry-Kissinger-Chair for security and strategic studies.

From September 30 to October 2, the International Security Forum Bonn serves as a platform to convene distinguished international security experts as well as practitioners of security and foreign policy to debate current challenes in international relations.

The Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies is a new interdisciplinary research center at the University of Bonn in the field of strategic foreign, European and security research. Its aim is to develop and evaluate European strategies on current challenges in the field of foreign and security policy and to discuss them with the German, European and international public. What makes the Center unique is its innovative structure: It closely interlinks extended security and strategy research based on a broad concept of security with European integration research.

The Center’s work revolves around some key question that guide its research:

  • How can Germany and the European Union react strategically to traditional and non-traditional security challenges?
  • How and by what means can Germany and the European Union achieve foreign and security policy goals?
  • Can European integration and enhanced cooperation make European security policy more efficient?
  • What is Germany’s and Europe’s current strategic position and status on the international stage?
  • What are perspectives for the transatlantic partnership between the United States and the European Union, and in what ways could this relationship be(re)shaped in the future?

Germany and Europe are facing new challenges for which there is no simple solution. They range from great-power rivalry and arms races to terrorism, cyberattacks and the fight for resources to mass migration, climate change and pandemics. CASSIS wants to understand these challenges and explore options to address them in a strategic manner and from a European perspective.
