NGOs and the Investigation of Human Rights Violations Using Earth Observation Satellites

NGOs and the Investigation of Human Rights Violations Using Earth Observation Satellites

May 21, 2026 | 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM | Lecture Hall 3, University Main Building (Regina-Pacis-Weg 1, 53113 Bonn)

Over the past two decades, satellite imagery has become increasingly commercialized and widely accessible to a broad range of civil society actors. Today, it is frequently used to detect and document violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. This event focuses on the under-researched practices of satellite imagery analysts working in civil society organizations.

Drawing on empirical research based on observations and interviews, it highlights the uncertainties involved in satellite image interpretation and the limitations analysts face within the commercial and political contexts of geospatial analysis.

The event is intended for anyone interested in the intersection of space and human rights advocacy

The event is organized by the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and the student group ASTRA.
