Profile

Dirk Brengelmann studied Economics, Business administration and History in Heidelberg and Hamburg. From 1980 to 1984, he worked at Westdeutsche Landesbank before joining the Foreign Service.

After several posts in Germany and abroad, including German ambassador to Brazil and the Netherlands, he worked as a political advisor in London and Washington, deputy European correspondent, deputy head of cabinet in NATO and head of unit in the Chancellery and the Foreign Office.

In 2008 he became Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO and in 2010 Assistant Secretary General of NATO. Assignments as cyber and foreign policy officer and bilateral ambassador to Brazil and the Netherlands followed, until July 2021.

After leaving the diplomatic service in 2021, Brengelmann accepted a lectureship at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Bonn and is also a senior fellow at the Centre for Advanced Security Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS), focusing on security policy and multilateralism.
