Volker Kronenberg, Prof. Dr. phil., born in 1971, teaches political science at the Institute for Political Science and Sociology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and as an honorary professor at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. As an exponent of the "Bonn School," which is committed to political science as a practical science, Kronenberg combines research in contemporary history and intellectual history with practice-oriented analysis of contemporary and future political challenges. In his academic-professional work, Kronenberg gave expression to this attitude, among other things, in 2011 as co-founder of the Bonner Akademie für Forschung und Lehre praktischer Politik GmbH (BAPP) and in the same and the following year 2012 as a member of the German Chancellor's expert dialogue on the future of Germany and, since 2019, as one of the founding directors of the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) at the University of Bonn, the establishment of which he had significantly promoted during his election as full-time dean of the Faculty of Humanities a year earlier. He regularly comments on and analyzes current political events in numerous media, such as the TV station PHOENIX, WDR, the Tagesschau, the news magazine FOCUS, the Bonner General- and the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. Kronenberg is, among other things, a member of the board of trustees of the Bonn Institute for Journalism and Constructive Dialogue, the Federal Chancellor Adenauer House Foundation, the Catholic Social Institute (KSI) and the Foundation Senate of the Economy.

Research Projects

  • "Europa vor Ort"

In cooperation with the KommunalAkadamie of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
In this publication of the KommunalAkademie of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Prof. Dr. Volker Kronenberg discusses in concrete terms the ways in which municipalities can benefit from European unification and a common European funding policy. The presentation of legal provisions of cohesion policy and the theoretical findings of the study are illustrated by significant case studies. The author focuses on rural regions as well as urban agglomerations. In addition, he sheds light on the European Union's funding programs for municipal refugee assistance in a way that is as concise as it is highly topical. The interplay of qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys of municipal experiences with the funding policy of the European Union not only represents a stocktaking worth reading, but also enables an exciting look "behind the scenes".

  • "Schwarz-Grün"

    • Anthology 2016: Das deutsche Parteiensystem im Wandel:Schwarz-Grün - Erfahrungen und Perspektiven

    • Expert Conference June 19, 2015: Das deutsche Parteiensystem im Wandel: Schwarz-Grün - Erfahrungen und Perspektiven
On June 19, an academic expert conference entitled "Das deutsche Parteiensystem im Wandel: Schwarz-Grün – Erfahrungen und Perspektiven" was held at the University of Bonn. In the course of the processes of change in the German party system, cooperation and coalitions between the CDU/CSU and the Greens - once political antipodes - have evolved from exotic exceptions to "normal" alliances, at least at the municipal and to some extent also at the state level. Even if some observers were already singing the swan song of "black-green" after the premature failure of two state governments, a look at Hesse shows that this coalition model is highly topical.

    • 2011 anthology: Schwarz-Grün. Die Debatte
