"Stuck in the Middle”:  How can Israel navigate the intensifying great power competition on science and innovation

May 18, 2022,  11:00-12:00 pm | Lecture hall IX Bonn University

As tensions between the superpowers continue to intensify, it is becoming clear that science and technology will play a decisive role in deciding the outcome. Small states and middle powers are increasingly pressed to rethink their policies not only on issues such as trade and security policy but increasingly on science and technology.  Israel, the “startup nation” is finding itself under increased pressure from both the United States and China. This talk will explore how the current global power shift influences policies in the innovation and scientific research fields. It will discuss potential implications of the shifting nexus of science, technology and security has for policy makers and researchers and how middle countries can find a balance between competing geopolitical actors.
