Die gegenwärtige Deutsche Marine als Instrument der Außenpolitik

22. November 2022 | 19:00 Uhr | Fontainengraben 150, 53123 Bonn, Federal Ministry of Defence, Moltke-Saal (House 205)

Naval forces are an important instrument of a state's foreign policy. Due to its specific characteristics, a navy allows for a global presence and versatile ability to act. Today, the navy, as a component of the Bundeswehr, has to cover a wide range of missions: from e.g. permanent maritime surveillance, the protection of allied reinforcement transports, to the protection of the Baltic Sea approaches, to the presence in permanent NATO maritime units in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Operations within the framework of the United Nations (e.g. UNIFIL Lebanon), NATO (e.g. ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR) and the EU (e.g. EUNAVOR MED IRINI) have taken place and continue to take place with the participation of German naval forces. The intention of the lecture with subsequent discussion is to inform about the special importance of the German Navy as an instrument of German foreign and security policy by means of the operational history of the Navy of the last 30 years.
