Bild, citing election polls conducted by 38 North Rhine-Westphalian newspapers, wrote on July 10 that Hendrik Wüst is currently more popular in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) than Friedrich Merz. If state elections were held in NRW right now, the CDU with Wüst as state party leader would receive 38 percent of the vote. In the event of a new federal parliamentarian election, on the other hand, the CDU's result in NRW - under the hypothetical presidency of Merz as NRW Minister President - would be reduced to 30 percent. Prof. Dr. Volker Kronenberg assesses the difference in the polls between Wüst and Merz as follows: "Something has developed with Hendrik Wüst: He strikes the right note and appeals to people across milieus, beyond the CDU. His popularity factor should not be underestimated. With Friedrich Merz, it's still different; he still meets with reservations even in his own camp."
