In a 4-minute segment titled “Weber on the Iran conflict” aired on n‑tv on June 17, 2025, Prof. Dr. Joachim Weber—security expert at the University of Bonn and Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS)—covers the strategic division of roles between Israel and the United States in the ongoing Middle East crisis. He describes how Israel undertakes the direct military action—or “dirty work”—against Iran, while the U.S. creates a supportive deterrent backdrop. This reflects a tacit coordination: Israel acts overtly, as Washington maintains strategic ambiguity from behind the scenes. Weber warns, however, that a direct U.S. intervention cannot be ruled out, raising the prospect of rapid escalation. He cautions that unless there’s strategic clarity and coherent diplomatic guidance, this dynamic risks spiraling into a broader regional conflagration. His conclusion stresses the importance of balanced military and diplomatic engagement to prevent unintended consequences and stabilize the situation.

Dr. Joachim Weber conducts research in the field of strategic foresight with the aim of generating better approaches for practical policy on the basis of analytical tools and better linking theory and practice. Before joining CASSIS, he researched geostrategically and security policy relevant developments in the High North in the ISPK Arctic Project (2017-2019). Dr. Weber is MItfounder of the Kavoma (Disaster Preparedness and Management) course at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (2006 ff.). For well over two decades, he has taught numerous courses on diverse topics of historical studies, political geography, and political science at the universities of Hamburg, Bonn, Zagreb, and Akron, OH.
