On September 4th, Dr. Frank Umbach gave an interview to t-online about the security of Germany's energy infrastructure. Dr. Umbach explained the extent to which it is possible to expand the grid in a way that provides protection against acts of sabotage and other attacks.

On August 29th, Dr. Joachim Weber published a guest article on Focus Online about the reintroduction of compulsory military service in Germany. 

On August 29, French television station BFM Business published an article entitled “Between industrial tensions and diverging ambitions, the Franco-German couple is floundering in defense matters” (orig.: Entre tensions industrielles et ambitions divergentes, le couple franco-allemand bat de l'aile en matière de défense). In it, Dr. Johanna Möhring, Associate Fellow at CASSIS and lecturer at the French university Sciences Po Grenoble, examined the current political challenges facing Franco-German armament projects.

Political scientist and China expert Prof. Dr. Xuewu Gu was quoted in the article “Three Against the West” (Drei gegen den Westen), published by Martin Benninghoff in Handelsblatt on August 29th. 

On August 27th, Dr. Joachim Weber appeared live on the television program Phoenix vor Ort to comment the simultaneous opening of the new Rheinmetall artillery factory in Lower Saxony from a security perspective. The plant is now Europe's largest ammunition factory. The opening ceremony was attended by Vice Chancellor Klingbeil, NATO Secretary General Rutte, Federal Minister of Defense Pistorius, and Armin Papperger, CEO of the Rheinmetall defense company, among others. The interview with Dr. Weber is available between minutes 45:45 and 56:17.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie in an interview with DIE WELT: Ulrich Schlie considers the new military service law to be inadequate and calls for a return to compulsory military service. He considers the National Security Council to be necessary, but poorly constructed. Overall, Prof. Schlie calls for more honesty and consistency in security policy.

Dr. Hans-Dieter Heumann, Senior Fellow at CASSIS and Ambassador ret., wrote a commentary on the transatlantic partnership published on August 26th on the German-French news site dokdoc.eu. The commentary is titled “Is the transatlantic partnership dead?”.

Dr. Moritz Brake, Senior Fellow at CASSIS and expert on maritime security, explained the background to the activities of the Russian shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea in an interview given to WDR 5 on August 25th. The interview focused on the start of a trial in Finland against the crew members of the oil tanker “Eagle S.”. Its crew is accused of having severely damaged four telecommunications cables and the “Estlink 2” power cable in the Baltic Sea.
