Dr. Weber emphasized that cooperation on practical challenges of the present and future generally works well and that both sides agree on many issues. Difficulties arise primarily from historical and political aspects that fuel resentment – often exploited for domestic political purposes, so that even relatively pro-Western politicians such as Donald Tusk occasionally seek to distance themselves.
On the issue of compensation for World War II victims, Dr. Weber considered the monetization of historical events to be misguided. From the German side, there was little room for discussion, as the issue had already been sufficiently regulated in numerous agreements and treaties. In security policy, on the other hand, there was close and effective cooperation: Germany was clearly committed to supporting Poland in the event of an attack.
