On November 21, 2025, the Federal Ministry of the Interior established the new “Advisory Group on Preventing and Combating Islamism.” The aim of the advisory group is to develop a federal-state action plan to combat Islamism in Germany. The committee, consisting of 15 experts from academia, practice, and security agencies, is tasked with developing a holistic, preventive, and repressive approach to systematically identify and effectively limit Islamist structures, activities, and radicalization processes, particularly in the digital sphere and in education.

Prof. Dr. Christine Schirrmacher, an Islamic scholar at the Universities of Bonn and Leuven and a member of the CASSIS Center Council, has been appointed to the advisory board as a proven expert in Islamism research. She will contribute her scientific expertise on political Islam, Islamism, and radicalization processes to the committee's security and socio-political work.

CASSIS warmly congratulates Prof. Schirrmacher on this success!

Prof. Dr. Christine Schirrmacher received her habilitation in Bonn and is a professor of Islamic Studies at the Universities of Bonn and Leuven (Belgium). She is a member of the Center Council of the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) at the University of Bonn and a member of both the Scientific Advisory Board of the “Bundes Deutscher Kriminalbeamter (BDK)” (Federal Association of German Criminal Investigators) in Berlin and the Scientific Advisory Board of the “Zentrum für Analyse und Forschung (ZAF)” (Center for Analysis and Research) at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV).
