Profile
Stephen Gethins is a Professor of Practice at the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews. He previously served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons in Westminster where he was the SNP spokesperson on International Affairs and Europe. Stephen also spent two terms as a member of the influential Foreign Affairs Select Committee and worked on a range of issues including the conflicts in Ukraine, Syria and Yemen among others issues and was the Vice-Chair of the All Party Group on Climate Change. As the SNP Europe spokesperson Stephen was also at the heart of the parliamentary debates in the aftermath of the UK vote to leave the EU co-sponsoring cross-party legislation to prevent a 'No-Deal Brexit'. Before entering Parliament Stephen worked in the EU and with the international NGO sector in the former Soviet Union and Western Balkans as well as a
Special Adviser to Scotland's First Minister on International and EU affairs as well as Energy and Climate Change. Stephen is a regular contributor to broadcast and other media in the UK and recently published his first book Nation to Nation: Scotland's Place in the World (Luath Press, 2021).
