From the perspective of Dr. Charrier, expert on Franco-German relations, three scenarios are conceivable following a possible fall of the Bayrou government. In the first scenario, President Macron could resign, although this is unlikely. In the second scenario, he could dissolve the National Assembly once again – but this would also prove difficult, as the right-wing populist parties Reconquête! and Rassemblement National would significantly increase their share of seats in parliament this way. In the third scenario, Macron could appoint either the popular Minister of Economy Éric Lombard or Olivier Faure, member of the National Assembly and secretary-general of the social democratic party PS, as the new prime minister. According to Dr. Charrier, the current polarization of French domestic politics is not a new phenomenon and even dates back to the French Revolution. Finally, the expert on French politics explained that France will have to struggle with its economic challenges for a long time to come, particularly in reducing its growing mountain of debt.
