Dr. Frank Umbach explained that Russia's repeated military provocations in recent weeks constitute an attack on the sovereignty of the states concerned. According to the security expert, Russian drones and missiles could be shot down immediately after entering NATO airspace under international law. Smaller drones also pose a particular threat, as unlike larger drones and missiles, they can only be identified very late and poorly on radar, according to Dr. Umbach. However, greater caution is required with fighter jets and other manned aircraft. The latter must first be asked to leave the airspace before they can be shot down under international law. Dr. Umbach pointed out that Russia's provocations reveal the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in Germany and the EU in particular. Yesterday's sightings of drones over Copenhagen Airport and Oslo's metropolitan area are a further sign of the growing threat to the security of critical infrastructure, according to Dr. Umbach.
