Dirk Brengelmann studied economics, business administration and history in Heidelberg and Hamburg. From 1980 to 1984 he worked for the Westdeutsche Landesbank, including two years in Tokyo, Japan.

After joining the Federal Foreign Office, he held several positions in Germany and abroad. He was, among other things, political advisor in London and Washington, deputy European correspondent, deputy head of cabinet in the NATO and head of division in the German Chancellery and the Foreign Office.

In 2008 he became Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO and in 2010 Assistant Secretary General of NATO.

This was followed by assignments as Commissioner for Cyber and Foreign Policy and Ambassador to Brazil and the Netherlands, until July 2021.

Since the winter semester of 2021, he has been a lecturer at the University of Bonn and the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies, specialising in security policy and multilateralism.
