Prof. Dr. Evelyn Bokler conducts research in the field of comparative extremism studies, with a particular focus on Islamism in the MENA region and in Germany. She also examines the political systems of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as issues of political rule and its legitimacy. She is co-editor of the quarterly journal WEITERDENKEN, published by Kohlhammer, and of the yearbook Öffentliche Sicherheit, published by Nomos.

Before returning to academia in 2016, she had been working for the Deutsche Gesellschaft e. V. since 2009, serving, among other roles, as head of the “Politics & Society” department and deputy executive director, and most recently helping to establish an educational institute in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Bokler studied political science, public law, and modern history in Munich, Heidelberg, Florence, and Bonn, and earned her doctorate from Chemnitz University of Technology. In 2023, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Bonn awarded her the dual venia legendi in political science and Islamic studies. Her habilitation thesis is titled “The Dictatorship of the Islamic State and Its Normative Order.”
