Profile
Vanessa Dreier holds a Bachelor's degree in International Development from the University of Vienna and a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Bonn. She also completed a postgraduate program at the Center for Rural Development at Humboldt University in Berlin. She currently works as a Senior Technical Advisor for Digital Transformation at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, focusing on data and AI governance in the Global South. Previously, she worked at UNESCO on digital policy and digital inclusion.

Doctoral Project
In her dissertation, Vanessa Dreier examines the growing African efforts to shape data and AI governance on the continent. They represent a shift from a reactive regulatory stance to a strategic regionalism that enables African countries to respond coherently to transnational challenges such as data colonialism, algorithmic bias and platform monopolies.
