Arctic 2029 – A Strategic Simulation Game

How do shifts in power politics in the Arctic region lead to new partnerships or strategic dependencies? What geopolitical and geographical conditions must be taken into account? And what role do economic instruments such as investments, trade agreements, or resource development play?

These complex questions will be explored in a strategic simulation on July 13. The simulation was developed by the German Wargaming Center (GWC) at Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg. Its co-director, Dr. Joseph Verbovszky, and GWC project manager Xenia Schröder will lead the simulation. The event is aimed at students and anyone interested in foreign and security policy. No prior specialized knowledge is required to participate.

The event will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Moritz Brake, a renowned expert in maritime security and strategy. He is a Senior Fellow at CASSIS, founder and managing director of NEXMARIS, and a reserve officer in the German Navy.

Afterward, the participants receive an introduction to the Center. Participants gain insights into the research work, various game designs, scenarios, and the Center’s use for training decision-makers in politics, the military, and civil society. In the game that follows, participants take an active role and step into the shoes of government and business actors. Participants make interactive decisions within a structured yet open scenario framework. In doing so, they gain firsthand experience of the dynamics of power politics in the Arctic region, shaped by geopolitical rivalry, economic interests, and technological development. Finally, the results are analyzed and evaluated together with experts.

The event is organized by the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) in cooperation with the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association Germany (YATA) and the Young DGAP – German Council on Foreign Relations.

Participation in the event is only possible with prior registration!
