Introduction to Astropolitics
April 16 | 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Lecture Hall 3, University Main Building (Regina-Pacis-Weg 1, 53113 Bonn)
Space exploration has been experiencing a renaissance in recent years. Following the first race to the moon, space is once again the focus of major and middle powers. Human civilization is highly dependent on technologies in orbit. In recent years, what was once a niche technical topic has evolved into an interdisciplinary field where economic, scientific, and military interests converge.
This event offers a fundamental introduction to astropolitics and raises the question of why space has become an increasingly important arena for political and strategic action today. The focus is on the growing significance of space infrastructure for security, the economy, communication, and state capacity, as well as the question of why developments in space are no longer merely technical or scientific issues. The course will cover key state and private actors, their interests and objectives, as well as current dynamics of competition, power, and order in space.
The course is organized by the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and the student group ASTRA.
