Philosophy of Space
July 16, 2026 | 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM | Lecture Hall 3, University Main Building (Regina-Pacis-Weg 1, 53113 Bonn)
Space has never been merely a technical frontier; it has also always been a philosophical one. In this talk, Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser explores how humanity's understanding of outer space has been shaped by centuries of philosophical thought, from Plato's vision of the heavens and Giordano Bruno's cosmic imagination to Romanticism, modern spaceflight philosophy, and contemporary debates on the role of philosophy in space exploration.
The lecture will examine questions such as whether outer space can be conceived as a realm of peace, how philosophical ideas have influenced early science fiction and concepts of space travel, and how these traditions continue to shape today's space sector. It will also highlight the growing importance of philosophy and cultural reflection within modern space organisations and initiatives.
The event is organized by the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and the student group ASTRA.
