China as a Great Power: Actions and Ambitions in World Politics

October 20, 2026 / 7:00–8:30 p.m. / Conference Room, Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Bonner Talweg 17, 53113 Bonn)

Today, China is far more than just an economic superpower. Whether it’s Russia’s war against Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, the security of international trade routes, or the future of the United Nations – Beijing’s foreign and security policy decisions are increasingly influencing Germany’s and Europe’s security, economic, and energy policies. In doing so, China combines economic interests, diplomatic initiatives, and strategic partnerships into a foreign policy that is increasingly challenging existing power dynamics.

Together with Dr. Eva Seiwert, Senior Analyst at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), we will take a look at China’s foreign and security policy strategy. The focus will be on relations with Russia, China’s role in the Middle East and in international organizations, as well as the implications for Europe’s security, the energy market, and Germany’s scope for action in foreign policy.

The event is organized in cooperation with the Society for Security Policy Bonn (GSP), the Bonn/Rhine-Sieg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), and the Student Group for Foreign and Security Policy Bonn (BHAS).
