New Dependencies? The Externalization of Migration Management and Its Consequences for the EU

New Dependencies? The Externalization of Migration Management and Its Consequences for the EU

July 2nd 2026 | 06:15 – 08:00 pm | Institut français Bonn and via ZOOM

Hybrid Event

On June 12, large parts of the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum will enter into force, marking a turning point in the institutional and political orientation of EU migration policy: The European Union is increasingly shifting responsibility for migration policy to third countries. This strategy raises fundamental questions regarding political dependence, normative coherence, and long-term governance. The event will analyze the logic of externalization, its effectiveness, and its legal and geopolitical consequences for the EU.

The events taking place as part of the Franco-German Strategic Dialogue are organized by the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) in cooperation with the Institut Français, the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC), and the Bonn University Group for Foreign and Security Policy (BHAS). The entire series of events is financially supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
