According to political scientist Dr. Joachim Weber, it is initially surprising that the USA once again supplies Kyiv with Patriot air defence systems after the US government had announced the depletion of Patriot stocks. Trump's about-turn results from the lobbying of the Moscow-critical group within the Republican Party, which is calling on the US President to adopt a more uncompromising stance towards Moscow. According to Dr. Weber, however, the new Patriot air defence systems will not be able to prevent the massive bombardment of Ukrainian cities by Russian drones - their effect would rather be to defend against ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. The political scientist also assessed Defense Minister Boris Pistorius' consideration of procuring the US “Typhon” missile system for the German Armed Forces. Although the procurement could contribute to Germany's military deterrence, it could not solve the core problem of Berlin's current military dependence on Washington, according to Dr. Weber. From the political scientist's point of view, the joint development of an autonomous European arms industry would be more efficient for the successful deterrence potential of Germany and the EU.
