Currently, there are numerous threats to shipping in the strait, including drone attacks, rocket fire, and sea mines. Often, the mere threat from Iran is enough, as civilian companies cannot bear the associated risks as long as there is an acute danger of war. Effective protection of ships would currently be possible only through the deployment of substantial military resources and would still entail significant risks.

The blockade of the Strait announced by the U.S. is primarily aimed at preventing ships from paying the toll demanded by the Iranian leadership and thereby providing financial support to the regime in Tehran. At the same time, this is intended to exert additional diplomatic pressure.

With regard to a possible deployment of the Bundeswehr in the region, it is important to note that involvement in a war situation always carries the risk of casualties and could only be carried out with the deployment of significant resources and with the appropriate political mandates.
