Dr. Frank Umbach explained that the participation of a US company in Nord Stream or TurkStream would not work since the EU is phasing out imports of Russian fossil fuels. The original idea of economic incentives for a peace agreement is unrealistic in the short term. It would also be difficult to “relabel” Russian gas as Turkish, as the EU would introduce greater transparency, controls, and new measures to prevent sanctions from being circumvented, for example through ship-to-ship transfers or fuel blending, Dr. Umbach said.

Dr. Frank Umbach is Head of Research of the European Cluster for Climate, Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS)
