While it is difficult to say definitively why Germany has neglected to procure modern defense systems for so long, it is imperative that politicians must take more proactive action to close existing security gaps. According to Dr. Weber, responsibility for dealing with unknown drones within Germany should lie primarily with the federal police in order to avoid overlapping jurisdictions between state police forces. Meanwhile, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) should concentrate on defending the external borders. Dr. Weber suggested making more decisive use of existing legal frameworks such as the 2004 Aviation Security Act. Instead of continuing to debate, political courage is now needed to effectively protect Germany's airspace in the future.
