In the run-up to the EPC summit in Copenhagen, Dr. Joachim Weber criticized the EU's hesitant stance on establishing an effective drone defense system. Although Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders have now prioritized the issue, incidents such as recent airspace violations over Poland demonstrate the urgency of decisive action, particularly on Europe's eastern flank.
Dr. Weber describes the shortcomings of rigid “drone walls” and advocated for flexible systems that could adapt to different threat directions. With regard to Germany, he spoke about current plans to establish a drone defense center and the possible expansion of the German Armed Forces' powers to shoot down enemy drones. Legal and organizational reforms need to be closely linked to technical procurement. At the same time, it still has to be clarified who would be liable for potential damage to property and persons in the event of a shoot-down. Only a coordinated European strategy can guarantee permanent protection.
