In an interview with n-tv, Dr. Landry Charrier described the appellate ruling against Marine Le Pen as a landmark decision both legally and politically. While the court upheld the conviction, it significantly reduced the duration of her ineligibility to 15 months. Under current law, this would allow Le Pen to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Dr. Charrier also pointed out the prison sentence imposed on Le Pen, which she is to serve while wearing an electronic ankle monitor. Since the conditions of such a sentence are often relaxed after just a few months, this could still pave the way for her to run for office. The ruling now shifts the decisive questions into the political arena. The focus is on the strategic decisions of Marine Le Pen and the Rassemblement National, as well as the future division of roles with party leader Jordan Bardella.

Dr. Landry Charrier is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic, and Integration Studies (CASSIS).
