Dr. Umbach: Opponents of the Agreement Use Hostages as "Ammunition" in the Middle East Conflict Dr. Umbach: Opponents of the Agreement Use Hostages as "Ammunition" in the Middle East Conflict

The Middle East conflict and the relationship between Israel and Hamas have been marked by tensions and violent confrontations for years. A recently proposed agreement that held hope for de-escalating the situation is now under pressure. Various actors, particularly Iran and other groups, could jeopardize the deal due to differing strategic interests. Hostages, who play a central role in the conflict, are being used as leverage, further complicating negotiations.

In the interview, Frank Umbach explains that the planned deal between Hamas and Israel is hanging by a thread. Not all groups support the agreement, and Iran's unclear strategic interests could jeopardize the success of the arrangement. Umbach emphasizes that tensions between the U.S. and other actors could also disrupt the implementation of the deal. He further points out that hostages are being used as "ammunition" by opponents of the agreement, making the situation even more volatile.

Dr. Frank Umbach is the Research Director of the European Cluster for Climate, Energy, and Resource Security (EUCERS), Adjunct Senior Fellow at RSIS Singapore, and a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Natolin/Warsaw.
