The current war in Ukraine casts a shadow over the turbulent conflicts in the Middle East. They are destabilizing the region once known as the Fertile Crescent. Syria and its neighboring regions are struggling with the consequences of the civil war, the power struggle between regional and international players and the devastating effects of an earthquake at the beginning of 2023. What prospects does the country have for a secure and stable future?

After an introductory presentation by Mr. Seidt on the current security situation in Syria, the participants discussed the geopolitical impact of the civil war, international attempts at mediation by the EU, USA, Turkey and Iran as well as the socio-economic effects of the conflict on the Syrian population.
