The dimension and consequences of climate change pose enormous challenges to humanity. Therefore, the world is at a difficult crossroad today, facing an apparent trade-off between an escalation and proliferation of global threats to human security and a return to the path of sustainable development for all. However, the effects of climate change vary around the world.  According to the IPCC report, the effects of climate change will increase in Latin America and the Caribbean. Affecting a region that is central to global climate sustainability in terms of biodiversity (including the Amazonas rainforest), renewable energy production, as well as a major producer of agricultural commodities.

Furthermore, Latin America plays a central role as a supplier of strategic raw materials for the emerging new green and technological economy. Moreover, the effects of climate change also have political-economic considerations in a region still considered the most democratic in the global south.

In cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the five-part dialogue series will focus on the consequences of climate change for security and development policy. The aim is to discuss issues, which are important for the countries of the global south as well as for Germany and Europe, with high-ranking experts and to raise awareness of their importance in public discourse.

The online dialog series will address different facets of climate change in Latin America in a total of five Zoom webinars. After an initial introduction to the basic problem areas with their security and development policy aspects, our experts will focus on the following topics: raw materials for the future (e.g. lithium), water as a factor of life and development as well as the strategic protection of the tropical rainforest. The closing event will discuss the impacts of climate change on food security in Latin America and some conclusions on the challenges facing the region in the coming years.
