Prof. Dr. Gu discussed Europe's tense trade relations with China and the USA as well as Xi Jinping's political, economic and geostrategic goals together with Jürgen Trittin, former Federal Minister and former Green Party foreign politician, and Antje Höning, economic expert and journalist. The political scientist presented four overarching strategic goals of China: (1) peaceful rise to power without provoking established powers, (2) market economy without the dominance of private capital, (3) urbanization "without slums", (4) modernization without democratization. Despite systemic differences, stable cooperation between Germany and China is possible, as Gu pointed out using the example of Angela Merkel's China policy. The Chancellor had succeeded in dealing respectfully with the Chinese leadership, which nevertheless enabled constructive criticism of foreign and domestic policy conditions and developments in China. In the final phase of the panel discussion, Prof. Dr. Gu assessed the situation in Taiwan. The China expert considered an imminent outbreak of war between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan to be unfounded, as an armed invasion by the People's Republic would not be in Beijing's interests – at least as long as Taiwan does not formally proclaim its independence.
