Modernes Chinesisch: Sprachliche Besonderheiten und die Kunst kultureller Translation

13 July 2023 | 18:30 - 20:00 | Online

More than one billion people speak modern Chinese, a world language that is growing in cultural and political influence. Although it is difficult to learn, Chinese is becoming increasingly popular as a foreign language worldwide. In our anniversary episode, we look at the special character of the Chinese language and its influence on culture and mutual understanding.
What are the special linguistic and cultural challenges of translating Chinese into German? What does current Chinese literature deal with? How important is mastery of the Chinese language for the China competence of decision-makers in business, science and politics? What role will artificial intelligence play in learning and translating Chinese? And why are student numbers in German sinology, of all fields, continuing to decline?

This event will take place in German. It is a part of the lecture series "Chinas Moderne Begreifen - Europäische Reflexionen". This event is conducted in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and in the framework of the research group „Infrastructures of Chinese Modernity and their Constitutive Global Effects" organized by the NRW Return Program of the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
