The high economic and technological connectivity that has emerged worldwide through globalisation is in tension with the return of geopolitical rivalries. The block formations between China and Russia on the one hand and the USA and its allies on the other have intensified significantly as a result of the war in Ukraine. A conflict of goals between security and trade is emerging between China and the transatlantic region. Contradictory political dynamics are the result: China, the USA and Europe remain key economic partners, but ideologically and in terms of power politics they increasingly see each other as competitors or even opponents. How are China and the West reacting to this development? What trends are emerging in the reorganisation of European security and foreign economic policy?
