Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinemann-Grüder, political scientist and expert on armed conflicts in the post-Soviet states, among other things, summarized the current state of the war in Ukraine in the interview. The security expert first analyzed the meeting announced by US President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is to take place in Alaska on August 15th, 2025. According to Prof. Dr. Heinemann-Grüder, the fact that Ukrainian President Zelensky is not expected to attend the meeting proves that the US wants to end the war in Ukraine as swiftly as possible. He added that for the war to end, it is also crucial that Europeans are able to offer Ukraine solid security guarantees even without American support. Prof. Dr. Heinemann-Grüder pointed out that Ukraine would only accept possible territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for long-term security guarantees. This is because the Ukrainian leadership now realizes that, given the Russian armed forces' increasing territorial gains, it is unrealistic to expect to regain lost territories, including Crimea.
