The National Security Council "has to be implemented right now"

The CDU/CSU and SPD want to establish a National Security Council in order to respond more quickly and effectively to domestic and foreign policy crises. According to Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie, such a council has failed in the past due to “departmental egoism.”

On WDR 5 Morgenecho, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie describes the current debate on the introduction of a National Security Council. He attributes the difficulties involved primarily to the strongly pronounced departmental principle in the Federal Republic.

The focus lies on organizational issues. Its introduction would initially require a restructuring of the Federal Chancellery, which could also affect the Federal Intelligence Service, for example.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie is a historian, political scientist and, since 2020, Director of the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and Henry Kissinger Professor for Security and Strategy Research at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Bonn
