The world is currently in a state of great turmoil, and Germany can only make a limited contribution at this time to key international challenges such as the wars in Iran and Ukraine or the trade conflicts with the U.S.

The greatest security challenge for Germany at present is the war against Iran and its economic consequences. Even if the conflict were to subside, the effects would continue to be felt for years to come. The agreement with the U.S. that has likely been negotiated is, at best, a respite, since fundamental issues—such as Iran’s nuclear program or the long-term security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz—remain unresolved.

The G7’s ability to act is also limited. The remaining six member states are primarily focused on not upsetting the U.S. president and avoiding open conflicts within the alliance.
