Iran’s proposals for negotiations would differ significantly from those of previous years: The U.S. president expects concessions regarding Iran’s nuclear program, while the Iranian leadership is only willing to reopen the strait if, in return, its claims to the Strait of Hormuz are recognized and security guarantees are provided.
The dual blockade by the U.S. and Iran is difficult to overcome: Both sides see themselves as having a strategic advantage and assume they can maintain their economic blockade for longer. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that Trump will deviate from his position on the issue of nuclear concessions.
Referring to the German chancellor’s remarks about the “humiliation of the U.S.,” Ali Fathollah-Nejad noted that Iranian state propaganda would make extensive use of these statements.
Furthermore, it is currently unclear who is making the decisions in Tehran and what concessions the Iranian leadership is actually willing to make.
