The “SMILE” satellite is designed to help us better understand the interactions between space weather—such as solar storms—and Earth's magnetic field. The cooperation between Europe and China on this project is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, the collaboration could help prevent misunderstandings and foster an understanding of the other side’s intentions. At the same time, there is no guarantee that China is not concealing its true intentions. Given this security dilemma, caution is warranted.
