On November 4, Dr. Enrico Fels commented on the launch of the new ESA satellite Sentinel-1D, which will scan the Earth with high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) around the clock and in all weather conditions. Sentinel-1D collects important climate and environmental data as part of the Copernicus program, which is considered Europe's leading Earth observation project.

Dr. Fels emphasized the security implications of such satellites, as they allow areas to be spied on with much greater precision than, for example, public services such as Google Maps. At the same time, ESA has implemented security mechanisms. In the event of war, however, all COPERNICUS data could in principle also be used for military purposes. This underscores the satellite's importance not only for climate and disaster control, but also for Europe's security policy situation.
