Steve Witkoff, the US government's special envoy for the Middle East and peacekeeping missions, had met prior to the meeting with Vladimir Putin without his own interpreter. In Dr. Umbach's view, this constituted unprofessional behavior on the part of the US government, as the absence of an interpreter was conducive to misinformation and misunderstandings.
