Dr. Johanna Möhring comments on Franco-German defense projects on French broadcaster BFM Business Dr. Johanna Möhring comments on Franco-German defense projects on French broadcaster BFM Business

On August 29, French television station BFM Business published an article entitled “Between industrial tensions and diverging ambitions, the Franco-German couple is floundering in defense matters” (orig.: Entre tensions industrielles et ambitions divergentes, le couple franco-allemand bat de l'aile en matière de défense). In it, Dr. Johanna Möhring, Associate Fellow at CASSIS and lecturer at the French university Sciences Po Grenoble, examined the current political challenges facing Franco-German armament projects.

From Dr. Johanna Möhring's point of view, the greatest obstacle to the expansion of Franco-German security policy relations lies in the divergence of basic strategic orientations. Since Germany favors cooperation with the US and France, on the other hand, advocates a sovereign Europe, it is difficult for both countries to expand their existing cooperation in security and defense policy. However, Dr. Möhring pointed to the potential success of Franco-German tank and fighter jet projects: “Given their political and symbolic significance, there is a good chance that a compromise can be reached at the highest level.”

Dr. Johanna Möhring is Associate Fellow at CASSIS and at the Centre Thucydide in Paris. She also teaches at the University  Sciences Po Grenoble
