Colloquium on Ludwig Erhard's "Sonderkreis" Colloquium on Ludwig Erhard's "Sonderkreis"

On 22 May 2026, the Ludwig Erhard Foundation, in collaboration with Prof. Dr Ulrich Schlie organised an academic colloquium on Ludwig Erhard’s time in office. The focus was on the ‘Sonderkreis’, Erhard’s institutionalised advisory circle from 1964 to 1966, and the concept of the ‘Formierte Gesellschaft’ that emerged from it, which Erhard first presented during the 1965 Bundestag election campaign.

The colloquium addressed Erhard’s style of government and the role of his advisers, as well as the origins, political significance and downfall of the concept of the 'Formierte Gesellschaft' ('Formed Society'). The analysis of the 'Sonderkreis' was based on the first systematic examination of the preserved minutes in the archives of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation. It concluded that this diverse group of advisers played a key role in supporting Erhard, particularly in preparing speeches and campaign appearances.

The presentations also examined the political and social context of the concept. Participants discussed the extent to which the 'Formed Society' can be understood as a response to the social and economic changes of the 1960s, as well as the underlying ideas of economic and social order. It was also argued that the concept's failure was due less to its fundamental objectives than to the way in which it was communicated politically and publicly.

The results of the event will be published in an edited volume in May 2027.
